A case of mixed emotions unfolded in Botshabelo as a missing couple, Lebohang Mokatedi (29) and Nthabiseng Mokonyane (19), was found and reunited with their families. While the joyous reunion marked the end of a harrowing search, it was overshadowed by the arrest of Mokatedi on charges of fraud.
The 19-year-old Nthabiseng returned to Botshabelo on Monday, 30 December 2024, marking the first breakthrough in the search for the couple. Her return spurred further investigations by a dedicated team of officers, including Captain Mahlo, Sergeant Itumeleng Mara, and Constable Patrick Moleko. Their efforts led to the successful location and discovery of Mokatedi in East London.
However, celebrations were short-lived. Shortly after his discovery, Mokatedi was taken into custody following the opening of fraud cases against him in Bloemspruit and Selosesha. The police have confirmed that he will appear before the Bloemfontein Magistrate’s Court on 2 January 2024 to face these charges.
The authorities have urged any additional victims who may have been defrauded by Mokatedi to come forward.
