BREAKING NEWS: Armed Robbers Target Cash-in-Transit Vehicle in Bloemfontein

Bloemfontein, May 25, 2024 – In a brazen daylight heist, armed robbers targeted a cash-in-transit vehicle on Dolfin Street, Bloemside, near Lemo Mall in Bloemfontein. The perpetrators allegedly made off with an estimated R500,000 in cash.

The incident occurred around 10:30 AM when the cash-in-transit vehicle was performing a routine collection from businesses in the area. According to eyewitnesses, the robbers, armed with high-powered rifles, ambushed the security personnel, forcing them to surrender the cash. The assailants reportedly fired several shots into the air to intimidate bystanders and security guards before making their escape.

Police arrived promptly at the scene, cordoning off the area and initiating a manhunt for the suspects. Within hours, law enforcement recovered a vehicle believed to be the getaway car, abandoned in a secluded spot not far from the crime scene. The car, a silver sedan, was found with its doors open and engine running, indicating a hurried exit by the robbers.

Brigadier Motsepe of the Bloemfontein Police Department addressed the media, stating, "We are following several leads and have mobilized all available resources to apprehend the culprits. The recovery of the getaway vehicle is a significant breakthrough, and forensic teams are currently examining it for any evidence that could lead us to the suspects."

Security footage from nearby businesses and traffic cameras is being reviewed to piece together the sequence of events and identify the perpetrators. The police have also appealed to the public for any information that could assist in the investigation.

This incident has raised concerns about the safety of cash-in-transit operations in the region. The security company involved has not yet issued a statement, but industry experts are calling for enhanced security measures and better coordination with law enforcement to prevent such incidents.

Local residents expressed their shock and fear following the heist. "It's terrifying to think something like this can happen in broad daylight," said Thabo Mokoena, a shop owner near the scene. "We hope the police can catch these criminals quickly."

As the investigation continues, the Bloemfontein community remains on high alert, with increased police presence in key areas to reassure the public and deter further criminal activities.
