Community Services Head Holds Crucial Meeting with Funeral Parlour Owners

In a significant move aimed at addressing critical issues within the funeral services sector, Dr. Thabang Thinda, the Head of Community Services, convened a meeting with funeral parlour owners from across the city on Friday, April 19, 2024. The gathering served as a platform to discuss compliance matters, assess the state of cemeteries in Mangaung, and deliberate on tariffs for indigent funerals.

Dr. Thinda, emphasizing the importance of direct engagement, stated, "I have received complaints about the relationship that the city has with funeral parlours and I saw it necessary to call this meeting so that I can hear firsthand what are some of the challenges that you are faced with on the ground and how best we can find solutions to those problems."

Funeral parlours play a pivotal role as stakeholders in the city's operations, particularly in facilitating indigent funerals. Dr. Thinda underscored this significance, highlighting their contributions to the community. "As you would know that Executive Mayor, Cllr. Gregory Nthatisi is leading the Reclaiming the City campaign, which also looks at collaborations with various stakeholders for the benefit of the people of Mangaung," Dr. Thinda added.

The meeting aimed not only to identify existing challenges but also to foster a collaborative approach towards finding viable solutions. Officials from Dr. Thinda's office and the Office of the Executive Mayor were present to attentively listen to and document all concerns raised by funeral parlour owners.

Among the pressing issues discussed were compliance with regulations governing funeral services, the upkeep of cemeteries in the Mangaung area, and the establishment of fair tariffs for indigent funerals. These discussions are crucial for ensuring that funeral services meet the standards expected by the community and that adequate support is provided to those in need, especially during times of grief and loss.

The initiative reflects the commitment of the local government to engage with stakeholders proactively and address pertinent issues affecting the community. By fostering dialogue and cooperation, Dr. Thinda and his team are working towards building stronger partnerships that contribute to the overall well-being of the residents of Mangaung.

As the discussions progress, stakeholders anticipate tangible outcomes that will enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of funeral services in the city, ultimately benefiting all residents, particularly those in vulnerable circumstances.
