Correctional Services Department CFO Fired Amid PPE Scandal

In a shocking revelation, the Correctional Services Department has found itself embroiled in a scandal surrounding the procurement of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) during the tumultuous days of the Covid-19 pandemic. The scandal, which has now led to the dismissal of the department's chief financial officer, Dzivhuluwani Ligege, has brought to light alleged irregularities in the awarding of contracts worth R53 million.

According to reports, companies purportedly owned by individuals closely associated with senior officials within the Correctional Services Department were awarded contracts for PPE procurement before proper procurement instructions were issued by the National Treasury. The Special Investigative Unit (SIU), tasked with uncovering the truth behind the scandal, has labeled these contracts as "unauthorised expenditure" and condemned them as "irregular, fruitless, and wasteful."

The SIU's report paints a damning picture of the handling of these contracts, revealing a blatant disregard for proper procedure and transparency. It asserts that the officials responsible for awarding these contracts failed to fulfill their duties, resulting in a process that was neither fair nor equitable. Moreover, the failure to ensure transparency, competition, and cost-effectiveness further compounds the severity of the situation.

The scandal has not only exposed potential corruption within the Correctional Services Department but has also raised questions about the integrity of the procurement process during times of crisis. With the Covid-19 pandemic placing immense pressure on government agencies to swiftly procure essential supplies, the need for transparency and accountability has never been more critical.

In response to these revelations, the Correctional Services Department has taken decisive action by terminating the employment of Dzivhuluwani Ligege following a disciplinary hearing. However, many questions remain unanswered, and calls for further investigation and accountability are growing louder.

As the nation grapples with the devastating impact of the pandemic, it is imperative that government agencies uphold the highest standards of integrity and accountability in their dealings. The Correctional Services PPE scandal serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of unchecked corruption and the urgent need for robust oversight and transparency measures to safeguard public trust and resources.
