Central University of Technology (CUT) Marks Milestone Amidst Festive Commemoration
Bloemfontein, April 14, 2024 – The Central University of Technology (CUT) in Bloemfontein witnessed a historic moment on Friday, April 12th, as it celebrated its 20th anniversary with the induction of its fourth chancellor, Dr Thabane Vincent Maphai. Amidst joyful festivities, the occasion underscored the institution's journey of academic excellence and commitment to societal impact.
Dr Maphai, a seasoned academician with two decades of experience, alongside his leadership role as the chairman of the Sibanye Stillwater Board, accepted the mantle of chancellorship with a vision deeply rooted in the core values of education and societal responsibility.
In his inaugural address, Dr Maphai articulated the multifaceted role of universities, emphasizing their duty not only in teaching and research but also in shaping future leaders. He remarked, "We should not, however, succeed in everything else except in teaching and research because if we do that, we are not a university, regardless of our pretences."
Underscoring the pivotal role of students and academic staff, Dr Maphai reiterated, "Academic staff and students are the custodians of the institution’s quality of outcomes," emphasizing their importance in maintaining the institution's academic integrity and excellence.
Professor Pamela Dube, the Vice-Chancellor of CUT, echoed Dr Maphai's sentiments, highlighting the chancellor's significance as a steward, ambassador, and ceremonial figurehead of the university. She emphasized Dr Maphai's wealth of experience and wisdom, expressing confidence in his ability to guide CUT into a future of continued success and impact.
The inauguration ceremony coincided with CUT's recent graduation ceremonies, further amplifying the celebratory atmosphere. A total of 4,043 graduates were conferred degrees, diplomas, and certificates, with an additional five PhD degrees awarded at the Welkom autumn graduation ceremony held on Thursday, April 4th.
"From 2004 to 2023, CUT has confidently conferred 66,616 degrees, showcasing its commitment to academic excellence," remarked Professor David Ngidi, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor of Teaching and Learning. Addressing the graduates, he emphasized their significance as part of a distinguished group contributing to CUT's legacy of academic achievement.
As CUT embarks on its next chapter under the stewardship of Dr Thabane Vincent Maphai, the university stands poised to continue its legacy of excellence, innovation, and societal impact, reaffirming its commitment to shaping future generations of leaders and thinkers.
