Free State Floods Highlight Government Inaction: DA Premier Candidate

The recent floods in the Free State, sparked by heavy rainfall, have underscored the glaring shortcomings of the provincial government in effectively responding to natural disasters. Roy Jankielsohn, the Democratic Alliance's Free State Premier Candidate, has condemned the lack of coordination and sluggishness in the government's disaster management efforts.

Jankielsohn's criticism comes in the wake of flooding wreaking havoc in Kroonstad and its environs, causing substantial damage to roads and vital infrastructure. This event follows a string of disasters, including veld fires, sewage spills, and droughts, which have plagued the province in recent years.

The absence of a well-equipped and operational provincial disaster management center has exacerbated the situation. Despite the closure of the previous center by the Department of Labor years ago, the Free State government has failed to establish a viable alternative. Jankielsohn argues that the province should look to the Western Cape for guidance, where a functional disaster management center has demonstrated swift and efficient responses to crises, armed with essential resources and trained response teams.

Residents of the Free State have been left vulnerable, with inadequate support from dysfunctional municipalities and a lethargic provincial government. Last year's devastating veld fires, which claimed lives, livestock, and livelihoods, serve as a poignant reminder of the dire consequences of governmental inaction.

Jankielsohn asserts that the Free State government must prioritize the safety and well-being of its citizens by implementing robust disaster management measures. Prompt and coordinated responses are imperative to mitigate the impact of natural disasters and safeguard communities.

As the Free State gears up for elections, Jankielsohn's vocal critique serves as a rallying cry for accountability and change. The electorate is increasingly disillusioned with ineffective governance and demands leadership that prioritizes the welfare of its constituents.

In the face of mounting challenges posed by climate change and environmental instability, the Free State cannot afford complacency. It is incumbent upon the provincial government to heed the calls for action and institute meaningful reforms to protect its citizens in times of crisis.
