Mangaung Mayor Accused of Shielding Land Invaders – Residents Take Matters Into Their Own Hands

Bloemfontein - Tensions have reached a boiling point in Lourierpark, Bloemfontein, as residents accuse local authorities, including Mayor Gregory Nthatisi, of failing to address the influx of land invaders effectively. The situation escalated yesterday as frustrated residents took to the streets to protest what they perceive as inadequate action from the police and the Mangaung Metro.

According to residents, Mayor Nthatisi's response to their grievances during a recent meeting has only fueled their frustrations. Tshepo Malokoane, a 34-year-old resident of Lourierpark, expressed his disappointment, stating, "At the meeting, the mayor stated that we should just find common ground to stay with these people and we should just accept the situation as it is."

This statement reportedly led to unrest among the community members, prompting protests and road blockades. However, despite their outcry, the situation remains unresolved, with accusations mounting against local authorities, including allegations of protecting land invaders.

In response to the escalating tensions, the Freedom Front Plus (FF Plus) has issued warnings to the mayor and city manager, threatening legal action if the existing court order regarding the land occupation is not enforced promptly. Dr. Pieter Groenewald, leader of the FF Plus, has also contacted the national police commissioner to investigate the effectiveness of police action during the occupations.

Meanwhile, law enforcement authorities continue to grapple with maintaining public order in the affected areas. Police spokesperson Lt Col Thabo Covane confirmed that reinforced platoons of Public Order Police are deployed to manage crowds at the Brandkop farm and Bloemfontein Ext. 148. Despite efforts to restore calm, several individuals have been arrested for offenses related to public violence and contravening court orders.

Reports suggest that some land invaders have resorted to using containers as makeshift homes in the area now dubbed "Mountain View." This has further exacerbated tensions between residents and illegal occupants.

As the standoff continues, organizations like AfriForum 911 and Saai have stepped in, providing guidance to landowners on dealing with land occupancy issues. However, for the residents of Lourierpark, the immediate concern remains reclaiming their neighborhood and restoring peace amidst growing frustration and anger towards local authorities.

The fate of the ongoing dispute now hangs in the balance as both residents and authorities brace for further developments in what has become a contentious battle over land rights in Mangaung.
