The Member of the Executive Council (MEC) for Sport, Arts, Culture, and Recreation in the Free State, Ntombizanele Sifuba, took center stage at the Free State Primary Youth Championships held in Bloemfontein on December 6 and 7, 2024. Organized under the banner of the Free State Athletics Federation (Free State Athletics), this championship underscores the province’s dedication to promoting mass participation in athletics from a young age.

The event, which attracted budding athletes from across the province, served as a platform to nurture young talent and instill a culture of sportsmanship and excellence. MEC Sifuba’s active involvement in the event highlights her commitment to fostering grassroots development in sports, aligning with her vision for a vibrant, inclusive sporting culture in the Free State.

A Vision for Grassroots Development

In her maiden budget vote speech earlier this year, MEC Sifuba pledged to collaborate with all stakeholders to enhance sport, arts, culture, and recreation in the province. Her presence at the championships is a testament to that promise, marking a tangible step toward creating opportunities for young people to thrive in athletics.

Speaking at the event, MEC Sifuba emphasized the importance of partnerships in achieving these goals. “Sport is not just about competition; it’s about building communities, fostering unity, and unlocking potential,” she said. “Through initiatives like the Free State Primary Youth Championships, we are planting seeds for a healthier, more engaged youth population.”

Expanding Athletic Opportunities

MEC Sifuba also reaffirmed her commitment to working with the Free State Athletics Federation to ensure athletics as a sport is accessible across the province. The collaboration aims to bridge gaps in resources and opportunities, enabling young athletes from even the most remote areas to participate in structured athletic programs.

The championship is more than just a sporting event; it is part of a broader strategy to create pathways for young athletes to progress to provincial, national, and international competitions. This aligns with the Free State Athletics Federation’s mission of fostering excellence and inclusivity in athletics.

Looking Ahead

With MEC Sifuba at the helm, the province is poised for a revitalized approach to sports development. Her leadership and proactive engagement are set to inspire a new generation of athletes while promoting broader societal benefits through sports participation.

As the Free State Primary Youth Championships wrap up, the impact of the event will resonate far beyond the track. It stands as a beacon of hope and opportunity for young athletes, highlighting the role of sports in shaping the future of the province.

This championship is just the beginning of what promises to be a transformative journey for athletics in the Free State under MEC Ntombizanele Sifuba’s stewardship.
