Residents Warned of Imminent Floods in Free State

Department of Community Safety, Roads and Transport Advises Caution Amid Heavy Rains

The Department of Community Safety, Roads and Transport has issued a stern warning to residents and motorists in the Free State province concerning the escalating risk of flooding due to intense rainfall. With torrential downpours drenching various parts of the region, authorities have highlighted specific areas where the threat of flooding is particularly acute.

As per the advisory, motorists are being urged to exercise extreme caution, especially on roads prone to flooding. Among the critical routes identified as immediate risks are the N1 outside Kroonstad and the R34 between Welkom and Kroonstad, both of which have been severely affected by flooding. In light of this, motorists are strongly advised to seek alternative routes to ensure their safety and prevent potential accidents.

The recommended alternative routes include diverting from Bloemfontein and utilizing the R30 to Allanridge, then proceeding through Bothaville, and subsequently taking the R721 to Vredefort and Parys before rejoining the N1. This detour aims to circumvent the heavily flooded sections, providing a safer passage for commuters.

In a statement issued by the Department, motorists were implored to exhibit patience and adhere strictly to the rules of the road. Cooperation and vigilance from all drivers are emphasized as crucial elements in managing the current hazardous conditions. "Your cooperation in this regard will be highly appreciated," stated the Department, underscoring the importance of collective effort in mitigating the risks posed by the floods.

Furthermore, the South African Weather Services has issued a separate advisory specifically targeting residents of Mangaung. According to the forecast, the region is expected to experience level 6 thunderstorms, indicating severe weather conditions persisting until April 8th at 23:00. Residents are advised to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions to safeguard themselves and their property from potential storm-related hazards.

As the Free State grapples with the consequences of relentless rainfall, authorities remain vigilant in their efforts to ensure the safety and well-being of all residents. With the threat of flooding looming large, adherence to safety protocols and proactive measures are imperative to minimize the risks posed by the inclement weather.
