Since the launch of Showmax 2.0 through its Android TV app nearly two months ago, numerous users have reported encountering bugs and issues, sparking frustration among subscribers. The transition from the original version of Showmax to the Peacock-based Showmax 2.0 app, which occurred in early February 2024, has been met with mixed reviews and ongoing challenges.
Users initially faced hurdles during the migration process, including compatibility changes and a limited catalog. Although MultiChoice South Africa CEO Marc Jury described the migration as successful, with nearly all users seamlessly moved to the new platform, some customers continue to face difficulties. Acknowledging these challenges, MultiChoice encouraged affected users to reach out to their customer care teams for assistance.
However, despite efforts to address concerns, dissatisfaction persists among Android TV users. According to reviews on the Google Play Store, the Android TV iteration of Showmax 2.0 has garnered an average rating of just 1.6 out of 5, based on 2,250 reviews at the time of writing. Common complaints include random freezes, subtitle issues, navigation problems, and startup glitches.
Users have expressed frustration over various issues, including random app freezes, missing subtitles, and limitations on navigation options. Additionally, complaints about the disappearance of the skip intro button and the inconsistent appearance of the episode skipping button have been raised. Some users have also reported difficulties saving titles to personal lists.
While feedback from users of other platforms, such as Apple TV, Hisense VIDAA U, and Samsung Tizen, has been relatively positive, concerns about older Hisense and Samsung smart TVs no longer being supported have been noted.
Showmax responded to queries regarding the issues plaguing its Android TV app, stating that they are constantly monitoring and addressing platform-related issues. They emphasized the importance of downloading the latest TV firmware and app updates for optimal performance. Regarding subtitle availability, Showmax attributed limitations to factors such as user demand and the complexities of catering to diverse markets and languages across sub-Saharan Africa.
However, users remain dissatisfied, particularly with the absence of subtitles for popular shows like "The Office" and "The Rookie" on Android TV.
Despite challenges, Showmax remains committed to improving the user experience and continues to see strong engagement and viewership across a wide range of devices. The streaming service highlighted the success of specific content, such as the documentary "Tracking Thabo Bester," which has broken viewership records.
As Showmax endeavors to address user concerns and enhance its platform, subscribers eagerly anticipate improvements that will deliver a more seamless and enjoyable viewing experience on Android TV.
