Social Workers and Communications Staff Brave the Cold to Raise Awareness During Child Protection Week

Bloemfontein, June 4, 2024— In a heartfelt initiative to raise awareness about critical child protection issues, social workers from the Mangaung Metro District Office and dedicated communications staff took to the streets of Peterswart location in Bloemfontein today. Braving the cold and drizzling rain, the team embarked on a door-to-door campaign, engaging directly with parents and residents about the pressing concerns affecting the community’s children.

The campaign, part of the nationwide Child Protection Week (CPW) observance, aimed to shed light on the increasing cases of child abuse, bullying among learners, and the alarming rise in suicide attempts by young students in the area. These issues, identified as urgent and escalating, have prompted local authorities to intensify their outreach and education efforts.

“We believe that direct engagement with the community is crucial,” said a spokesperson from the Mangaung Metro District Office. “By visiting homes and speaking with parents and residents face-to-face, we hope to foster a deeper understanding of these issues and encourage a proactive approach to child protection.”

Residents welcomed the initiative, expressing gratitude for the information and support provided. Many acknowledged that such personal visits help to build trust and open lines of communication between the community and local authorities.

The door-to-door campaign is just one of the activities planned for Child Protection Week in Bloemfontein. Tomorrow, the awareness efforts will continue with a special event at Kamohelo Primary School. The school will host a series of activities designed to educate students, teachers, and parents about child protection, offering practical advice on how to recognize and prevent abuse and bullying.

“We are committed to creating a safe environment for all children,” said the principal of Kamohelo Primary School. “Our collaboration with the Mangaung Metro District Office is vital in ensuring that our students are aware of their rights and know where to turn for help.”

The broader Child Protection Week initiative aims to mobilize all sectors of society to ensure the care and protection of children. This year’s theme, “Let Us All Protect Children to Move South Africa Forward,” underscores the collective responsibility required to safeguard the well-being of the youngest and most vulnerable members of society.

As the week progresses, further community engagement activities and educational programs are planned, reinforcing the message that protecting children is a shared responsibility. The Mangaung Metro District Office encourages all residents to participate in these efforts and to remain vigilant in identifying and addressing child protection concerns.

For more information on Child Protection Week activities in the Mangaung Metro District, residents are encouraged to contact the district office or visit their official website.

By raising awareness and fostering a community-wide commitment to child protection, Bloemfontein is taking significant steps toward ensuring a safer, more nurturing environment for its children.
