City Manager Sello More Inspects Bloemfontein Zoo Ahead of Reopening

Bloemfontein, 24 May 2024 — Yesterday morning, City Manager Sello More conducted a comprehensive walkabout at the Bloemfontein Zoo to review progress ahead of its much-anticipated reopening. Accompanied by Heads of Departments and a team from the Johannesburg Zoo, More assessed the ongoing preparations aimed at revitalizing the facility.

“There is a lot of work happening on the ground and I am very impressed by the progress made to-date,” said More. “This facility belongs to the people of Mangaung, and we need to get it up and running soon.” He extended his gratitude to everyone involved in the preparatory process, highlighting the collaborative effort that has been crucial to the zoo’s refurbishment.

Dr. Thabang Thinda, Head of Department for Community Services, elaborated on the phased reopening plan. “The Zoo will be opened in phases, and the reopening also includes the Rose Garden and Island,” explained Thinda. “All these facilities will be accessible to the community of Mangaung.”

The Bloemfontein Zoo, a beloved local landmark, has been closed for extensive renovations. The support from the Joburg Zoo has been instrumental in ensuring the upgrades meet high standards, promising a revitalized space for both animals and visitors. The reopening phases will allow the community to gradually re-engage with the zoo and its adjoining amenities.

Excitement is building as the date for the initial phase of reopening approaches. Local residents have expressed anticipation for the return of this cultural and recreational hub, which plays a significant role in community life and environmental education.

The visit by City Manager More signifies a strong commitment to enhancing public spaces and providing quality facilities for the Mangaung community. As preparations continue, further updates will be provided to keep the public informed about the progress and specific reopening dates.

For now, the Bloemfontein Zoo stands as a symbol of community effort and dedication, soon to once again be a vibrant part of Mangaung’s landscape.
