In a bid to enhance public transportation in Mangaung Metropolitan Municipality (MMM), the city is gearing up for the launch of its Integrated Public Transport Network's (IPTN) Hauweng buses. A recent visit by the MMM Communications Unit to the temporary bus depot has shed light on the significant modifications made to these vehicles, marking a significant milestone in the city's transportation infrastructure.
Since the beginning of December, Hauweng bus drivers have been rigorously testing routes in Bloemfontein, ensuring the readiness of both the buses and the Phase 1C route. According to a statement released on social media by the MMM, the tour facilitated by IPTN Operations Officer Neo Ramafi showcased the sophisticated systems installed in the buses.
The deployment of cutting-edge technology is at the forefront of this initiative. Among the notable features installed on the buses are state-of-the-art cameras strategically positioned both inside and around the vehicles. This surveillance system, coupled with automated fare collection (AFC), not only records ticket transactions but also tracks the distance traveled by passengers from origin to destination.
"The Advanced Public Transport Management System (APTMS) plays a pivotal role in ensuring the efficiency and reliability of the Hauweng buses," stated the MMM. "Through seamless integration with the AFC and camera systems, the APTMS monitors daily routes, passenger counts, and overall operational performance."
Moreover, the Passenger Count system installed onboard accurately records the number of passengers boarding the bus, providing real-time data to drivers and contributing to better route management and service optimization.
