Massive EA Play Price Hike Hits South African Gamers

In a move that has sparked outrage among gamers, Electronic Arts (EA) has implemented a significant price increase on its EA Play game subscription service in South Africa. This adjustment includes more than doubling the fee of its entry-level annual plan, leaving many South African gamers feeling the financial strain.

Confirmation of the price hike came through emails sent to EA Play subscribers in various countries. However, it appears that South Africa is bearing the brunt of these increases. The monthly price of a regular EA Play membership on PC, PlayStation, and Xbox is skyrocketing from R48.50 to R89.95, marking an 85% increase. Meanwhile, the annual subscription price has surged from R299 to R649.95, representing a staggering 117% hike.

For subscribers of EA Play Pro, the premium tier of the service, the news is no less distressing. The monthly price is leaping from R200 to R304.99, while the annual plan is being jacked up by over R500, soaring from its previous price of R1,199 to R1,699.95.

In response to inquiries about the rationale behind these price changes, Electronic Arts emphasized its commitment to providing value to its members. The company stated, “The service we offer has grown in value since it launched almost 10 years ago, and we plan to add even more value for members in the future.”

However, many South African gamers are skeptical about this explanation, particularly given the substantial magnitude of the price hikes. Some have expressed concerns that such increases may price out less affluent gamers from accessing the service, potentially limiting their ability to enjoy EA’s games.

The new pricing structure is already in effect for new subscribers, while existing members will begin paying the increased fees on their next billing date, starting from May 10, 2024.

This move by Electronic Arts comes at a time when the gaming industry is experiencing significant growth globally, including in South Africa. With gaming becoming an increasingly integral part of entertainment culture, the decision to raise prices on a popular subscription service has certainly stirred up controversy and raised questions about affordability and accessibility within the gaming community. As South African gamers grapple with these changes, many are left hoping that EA will reevaluate its pricing strategy to ensure that gaming remains inclusive and accessible to all.
