More Peanut Butter Pulled from Shelves in South Africa – Clover in the Hot Seat



South Africa faces yet another setback in its food safety landscape as Clover, a prominent food producer, finds itself embroiled in a controversy over its peanut butter products. The National Consumer Commission (NCC) has turned its gaze towards Clover following the recall of over 10,000 units of Go Nuts Peanut Butter, marking the sixth brand to be pulled from shelves in the country.

In a statement released on Friday, 8th March 2024, the NCC disclosed its investigation into Clover for potential violations of the Consumer Protection Act. The investigation stems from Clover's voluntary recall of 10,776 units of Go Nuts Peanut Butter 400g. This decision was prompted by extensive testing revealing elevated levels of Aflatoxin, surpassing acceptable thresholds outlined in the R1145 Regulation Governing Tolerance of Fungus-Produced Toxins in Foodstuffs.

Aflatoxins, as described by the Cancer Institute, are hazardous toxins produced by certain fungi commonly found on agricultural crops, including staples like peanuts. Exposure to aflatoxins has been linked to an increased risk of liver cancer, prompting concerns over public health and safety.

Acting NCC Commissioner, Thezi Mabuza, expressed concerns over the recall, citing inconsistencies with the Consumer Protection Act. Mabuza emphasized the commission's commitment to safeguarding consumer rights and ensuring compliance with established regulations.

Consumers are urged to check their Go Nuts Peanut Butter 400g jars for the following best-before dates: 12th, 18th, and 19th June 2025, as well as 19th July 2025. Those in possession of products bearing these dates are advised to cease consumption immediately and return the items to the point of purchase for a full refund.

Clover's entanglement in this food safety debacle underscores the pressing need for robust quality control measures within the food industry. As authorities delve deeper into the matter, the spotlight remains on companies' accountability and their responsibility to prioritize consumer well-being.

This latest incident serves as a stark reminder of the ever-present risks associated with food production and distribution, prompting calls for heightened vigilance and regulatory oversight to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
