Shoprite's Sixty60 App Set for Major Revamp: A Game-Changer in the Making

In a recent earnings call, Shoprite Group CEO Pieter Engelbrecht dropped a bombshell for South African grocery shoppers: the popular Checkers Sixty60 app is undergoing a major overhaul. While app updates are common, a full rewrite signals significant changes are on the horizon.

Engelbrecht's casual announcement during the earnings call in early March 2024 hinted at the company's dedication to continuous improvement. "We're currently busy rewriting the platform," he disclosed, emphasizing the commitment to further develop Sixty60.

While details remain scarce, Shoprite assured MyBroadband that they are committed to enhancing the customer experience. "In our ongoing quest to reimagine grocery retail, Checkers Sixty60 is continuously exploring new innovations," they stated.

With over a million downloads on the Google Play Store alone, Sixty60 has cemented its place as South Africa's premier on-demand delivery service app. However, its average ratings on both Google Play Store and Apple App Store suggest room for improvement.

Common complaints from users include issues with delivery instructions, product availability, and order accuracy. Additionally, the absence of certain features like payment with FNB's eBucks loyalty points has left some customers wanting more.

Despite these challenges, Sixty60 remains profitable, a fact highlighted by Engelbrecht during the earnings call. He attributed its success to the unique logistics management strategy, leveraging the extensive store network as micro fulfilment centers.

Moreover, Shoprite's recent introduction of the Sixty60 Xtra Savings Plus subscription service demonstrates their commitment to customer satisfaction. Subscribers not only enjoy waived delivery fees and discounts but also benefit from innovative solutions like micro fulfilment centers.

While the timeline for the app revamp remains uncertain, anticipation is high among consumers eager for a more seamless grocery shopping experience. As Shoprite continues to push boundaries in the retail landscape, the forthcoming Sixty60 app could mark a transformative moment in South Africa's digital grocery industry. Stay tuned for updates as Shoprite prepares to unveil the future of grocery delivery with Sixty60's revamped app.
