In the age of convenience, South Africans are increasingly turning to on-demand grocery and takeaway delivery services. However, the ease of these services comes at a price, with delivery fees varying widely across different platforms.

Popular grocery outlets such as Checkers, Pick n Pay, Spar, and Woolworths offer on-demand delivery services, all charging a flat R35 delivery fee. These services provide a convenient alternative to traditional in-store shopping, with orders delivered within minutes or hours rather than days.

Checkers stands out with its XtraSavings Plus plan, offering free Sixty60 deliveries for orders over R350, albeit with a R99 monthly subscription fee. Customers must weigh the value of this subscription against their monthly spending habits to determine its worth.

Alternatively, savvy shoppers can utilize Massmart's OneCart app, which allows the aggregation of items from 15 different retailers into a single order. While this offers convenience and variety, delivery fees may increase to R70 if items need to be sourced from multiple locations.

Switching gears to the realm of takeaways, major platforms like Mr D Food and Uber Eats offer lower delivery fees compared to grocery outlets, charging R15 and between R3 to R15 per order respectively. However, these platforms offset their losses through commissions charged to restaurants, leading to higher prices for consumers.

Uber Eats, in particular, employs a complex fee structure including a service charge, which increases based on the total value of the order. While this fee is transparently displayed before checkout, it remains a point of contention for users and restaurants alike.

In response, Uber Eats offers an Uber One subscription for R50 per month, providing users with waived delivery fees and reduced service charges. This subscription model aims to incentivize loyalty while addressing consumer concerns over additional costs.
